A relaxation oscillator is typically characterized by a cycle of slow energy storage followed by rapid energy release once a threshold is reached. They put out either a sawtooth or a pulse waveform. A neon lamp wired across a capacitor and fed by a large resistor is a good example. A Marx generator is another, more spectacular example. The unijunction transistor is the quintessential semiconductor switchched circuit. This is an astable multivibrator. It does share some similarities but it's really pretty different on the whole.
