Little circuit I found off the internet and for experimenter its always usefull to have way to replace parts or have an easy fix thats cheap and work as well or better then the original product. Here's a variable zener diode that can be made of 2 transistors and some resistor it's fairly stable and has the ability to sink way more current compare to some zener.
