Tried to make a linear brightness controller

Without using current sources I made this because I have a 1602 through-hole LCD display in an Arduino kit I got a while back, as well as a mini-breadboard, a potentiometer, some resistors and an NPN transistor. I wanted to make a brightness knob for the display’s backlight, with as little of full-brightness and little-brightness deadzones as I could. To do that, the current through the backlight, in relation to the potentiometer’s wiper direction, had to be as close to linear as I could make it. This circuit is just me testing it. Gosh, that rant was LONG.
